Officials have announced the arrest of the alleged gunman accused of killing conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.
Here is what we know about Tyler Robinson, the man accused of firing the single fatal shot.
The Associated Press reported that Robinson is 22 years old and that he was not a student at Utah Valley University. Instead, he was admitted to Utah State University on a scholarship, where he attended only one semester in 2021.
Most recently, he was in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College, CNN reported.
It, along with Utah Valley University, is among the 16 schools in the Utah System of Higher Education.
Utah state voting records said he was a registered voter but had no political party affiliation, according to the AP. CNN said he did not vote in the two most recent elections and was listed as an “inactive” voter.
A family member told investigators that Robinson “had become more political in recent years,” lashing out at Kirk, according to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.
Robinson was raised in Washington, Utah, in the southwest corner of the state. It is a suburb of St. George.
Cox said Robinson had lived with family “for a long time” in Washington County, Utah, The Washington Post reported.
Robinson had mentioned the Utah Valley University stop of Kirk’s American Comeback Tour during a recent family dinner, a relative told investigators, CNN reported. “They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had,” Cox said during a Friday news conference. “The family member also stated Kirck was full of hate and spreading hate.”
According to court records, Robinson has not been convicted of any past crimes, The New York Times reported.
The accused gunman was arrested at 4 a.m. local time in Washington, Utah, after he turned himself in to the Washington County sheriff’s office earlier in the night. Robinson was booked in Spanish Fork, about 250 miles north, at 7:15 a.m., the Post reported. At some point, the sheriff turned Robinson over to Utah County law enforcement, the Utah State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.
He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm and obstruction of justice. He is being held without bail, the Times reported.
