Recall alert: BrightFarms recalls salad greens sold in 5 states after 8 salmonella cases

IRVINGTON, N.Y. — BrightFarms has recalled packaged salad greens produced in its Rochelle, Illinois, greenhouse farm and sold in five states after receiving eight reports of salmonella cases among consumers.

“BrightFarms is taking this action out of an abundance of caution after being notified of illnesses among eight consumers, some of whom purchased or consumed the above products during the month of June,” the company stated in its voluntary recall notice.

The affected BrightFarms-branded products were sold by the following retailers, but the company cautioned that additional retailers may be affected:

  • Illinois: Mariano’s Fresh Markets, Strack Van Till, Sullivan’s Foods, Caputo’s, Jewel-Osco and select Walmart locations
  • Wisconsin: Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Copps, Tadych’s and select Walmart locations
  • Iowa: select Walmart locations
  • Indiana: Strack Van Till
  • Michigan: Tadych’s

According to figures compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella causes an estimated 1.35 million illnesses and roughly 420 deaths annually.

Symptoms can include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It can be fatal in the most severe cases, the CDC stated.

The recall includes the salad products listed below that were packaged in clear, plastic clamshells with “best by” dates through July 29:

  • BrightFarms Nutrigreens (3 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Butter Crisp (4 oz. Package)
  • BrightFarms Harvest Crunch (4 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Mighty Romaine (4 oz. and 8 oz. packages)
  • BrightFarms 50/50 Spring & Spinach (4 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Spring Crunch (4 oz. package)
  • BrightFarms Spring Mix (4 oz. and 8 oz. packages)
  • BrightFarms Sunny Crunch (4 oz. and 8 oz. packages)
  • BrightFarms Sunny Crunch (4 oz. and 8 oz. packages)

Consumers who have purchased the affected products should discard them or return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.
