Nintendo banks on nostalgia, brings back super-retro 1980s handheld device

NEW YORK — Everything old is truly new again with Nintendo’s latest retro gadget offering an old school glimpse into the world of gaming circa 1980.

The Japanese gaming company is planning to re-release Game & Watch, the handheld phenomenon that helped make Nintendo a household name 40 years ago, CNN Business reported.

The limited release of the 40th-anniversary edition of Game & Watch is slated to hit the market Nov. 13

All told, Nintendo produced 59 Game & Watch handheld games over the course of 11 years, setting the stage for Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, before Game Boy revolutionized the pastime beginning in 1989.

According to Nintendo Life, the resurrected Game & Watch maintains the original’s ’80s look, but the upgrades are undeniable among the three available games: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and Ball (the Mario version).

For instance, reintroduced models feature a color LCD screen and a rechargeable battery with a USB-C connector. It also doubles as an alarm clock, like those models produced after 1981, but now complete with 35 different screen-saver scenes of signature character Mario, CNN Business reported.
