The worker found what appeared to be a right foot on the 210 Freeway in San Bernardino County, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It was found on the eastbound side around 9:13 a.m. PDT by the worker, who was part of a crew conducting routine maintenance, KTLA reported.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the area was searched but no other remains were found, the KCBS reported. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office took possession of the foot, the television station reported.

The foot was bare with no identifying information and appeared to have been there for a while, the Times reported.

“It did not look like a fresh injury,” Sgt. B. Robinson the California Highway Patrol told the newspaper. “It could have been several days or longer. It was decomposing.”

California Highway Patrol Officer Ivan Sandoval told The San Bernardino Sun that the appendage may have belonged to a woman. No patients missing a foot were reported at nearby hospitals, the newspaper reported.

It is not the first time a California Department of Transportation employee has made a gruesome discovery.

In November 2021, a snowplow driver found the bodies of a man and a woman while clearing a stretch of highway near Yosemite, the Times reported.
