California man accused of trying to set another man on fire, police say

WESTMINSTER, Calif. — A California man is accused of attempting to set another man on fire with gasoline on Wednesday, authorities said.

Danh Thanh Nguyen, 36, of Westminster, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, attempted arson and civil rights violations, according to a news release from the city of Westminster.

According to police, Nguyen approached the victim, who was seated in his vehicle in Westminster, The Orange County Register reported. Authorities said Nguyen made “derogatory comments” about Latino people and then threw a cup of gasoline onto him, according to the newspaper.

According to Westminster police spokesperson Kevin MacCormick, Nguyen attempted to ignite the gasoline with a lighter, but the victim drove away.

MacCormick said the two men did not know each other, the Register reported. The victim was unhurt, according to the newspaper.

Nguyen fled the scene in a vehicle “he did not have permission to have,” MacCormick said. He was caught after a short pursuit, arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail. Bail was set at $1,000,100, according to online records.

Nguyen is expected to appear in court on Monday, records show.
