Bride, groom adjust wedding plans, have grandmothers step in as bridesmaids

When the coronavirus pandemic threatened one couple’s wedding plans, instead of canceling as many have done, the soon-to-be man and wife just made a change.

Originally Megan Kennedy had planned to have quite a few bridesmaids for her wedding to Thomas Cahoon, but then the pandemic struck, the Belfast Telegraph reported.

At first, Kennedy and Cahoon postponed their ceremony, but when they settled on a new date, they cut down their guest list to only 15 people, BBC News reported.

Not even her best friend who had been selected as her maid of honor made the pared-down list.

So Kennedy decided to ask two people she knew were going to be at her wedding to be her bridesmaids — her two grandmothers.

“My grandmas are the strongest and bravest women I know, and it has been so unfair on them that they have to spend so much of the year worried about the pandemic on top of their own health concerns — we just wanted them to realize how important they are,” Kennedy told Metro.

At first, the women thought it was odd, the BBC reported.

“They were like, ‘We’re too old to [be] bridesmaids,’” Kennedy told Radio 1 Network, according to BBC News.

Gillian Holloway, 80, and Mary Kennedy, 90, hadn’t been out of their homes since March, but they made the trip to London for their granddaughter’s October wedding.

There were no matching dresses, as traditionally worn by bridesmaids, but they did have their bouquets and they walked down the aisle together.

Megan Kennedy shared the photos on social media, which are getting thousands of likes, but the grandmothers don’t quite understand what’s going on. They’re getting the news of their newfound viral fame thanks to a story printed in the Belfast Telegraph.
