Even if you’re not a NASCAR fan, you’ve probably seen the viral video of driver Ross Chastain’s move where he floored it along the outside wall to qualify for the championship race this Sunday. Everyone called it a video game move, one where you don’t care about damaging the car because its just a game, and you’ve found a glitch that allows you to go faster than the track merits, by flooring it and running all out rubbing the wall the whole time. In fact, Chastain even admitted that he learned the move while playing NASCAR 2005 on Nintendo’s GameCube.
Chastain was in 10th place coming into the final lap, and needed to pick up 2 spots to qualify for the championship. So, since Martinsville is such a small oval, and a slower track than the huge 2 mile loops, most cars can only go around 95 mph even on the straightaways. Martinsville Speedway was built way back in 1947 and is a total of a half-mile all the way around. So when drivers hit the turns they’re slowing way down to the 50′s or 60′s. Martinsville is the shortest NASCAR track, too. So with the other drivers slowing way down to make the tight turns without running up into the wall, Chastain pulled out the old videogame move and was not only able to pull ahead 5 spots in the final turn alone, but he also set a track speed record all while sliding along the concrete barrier at just over 100 mph!
The first clip is a really cool driver’s eye view of the now viral wall-ride, and the 2nd is the clip with the most awesome soundtrack added, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird!
