LA LIBERTAD, El Salvador — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck off the coast of El Salvador overnight, the U.S. Geological Survey is reporting.

According to the agency, the quake, which occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. EDT Friday, was centered about 27 miles southwest of La Libertad at a depth of 35 miles. At least six aftershocks followed, El Salvador’s Ministry of Environmental and Natural Resources tweeted about 2 a.m.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the quake caused any serious damage or injuries.

“The population can rest assured that there is a team here that is working 24/7, and the National Civil Protection Commission is deployed to deal with any emergency,” said Fernando López, El Salvador’s environmental minister.

López added that there was “no tsunami threat” in the country, the government’s communications department tweeted overnight.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat following the quake, according to its website.
