New York personal trainer accused of shooting parents on Christmas morning

HEWLETT HARBOR, N.Y. — A New York-based personal trainer is accused of shooting and seriously injuring his parents on Christmas morning.

Dino Tomassetti, 29, of Brooklyn, is charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting his 64-year-old mother in the head. He is also accused of shooting his 65-year-old father in the torso and back, Nassau County police officials said.

The shooting took place at Rocco and Vincenza Tomassetti’s Long Island mansion, according to the New York Daily News. The couple, of Hewlett Harbor, is expected to survive.

“Both victims were conscious and alert and were transported in a Nassau County police ambulance to a local hospital for treatment,” authorities said Monday.

On Tuesday, Tomassetti remained jailed without bond in Bergen County, New Jersey, where he was apprehended following the shooting. According to the Daily News, he was arrested after New York state troopers spotted him driving in Mahwah, located about 50 miles from home and a couple of miles south of the New York state line.

Rocco Tomassetti is the owner of Empire Transit Mix Inc., a Brooklyn-based concrete and cement company, the Daily News reported. Neighbors expressed shock over the holiday weekend shooting.

“Kind of crazy because this is a very quiet neighborhood, kind of, like, a safe neighborhood,’ Ariella Bronfman told the newspaper. “Usually nothing like this happens here.”

The motive for the shooting is unclear.
