LeVar Burton to guest host ‘Jeopardy!’ after viral campaign draws nearly 250K signatures

The fans have spoken, and “Jeopardy!” producers listened.

LeVar Burton is among the five celebrities tapped to fill the remaining guest-host slots for the popular quiz show’s 37th season in the wake of longtime host Alex Trebek’s November 2020 death from pancreatic cancer.

Burton’s addition comes after a grassroots movement swelled to more than 246,000 online petition signatures, advocating for the actor, director, podcaster and children’s television host to step into Trebek’s role permanently.

An online schedule indicated that Burton, 64, will host the show on dates airing July 26 to July 30, WZTV reported.

The multifaceted Burton, best known for hosting and executive producing PBS’ “Reading Rainbow” and for starring as both Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and Kunta Kinte in “Roots,” currently hosts his own podcast, “LeVar Burton Reads.” The 13-time Emmy winner has also won a George Foster Peabody and Grammy for his work, Variety reported.

“Our goal has been to present a wide variety of guest hosts with different skill sets and backgrounds on our path to finding a permanent host,” “Jeopardy!” Executive Producer Mike Richards told the outlet.

“Our passionate fans are telling us what they like, and we are listening. All of the guest hosts have brought individualism, energy and an authentic love of our show to each of their episodes. We look forward to sharing the rest of the season with our viewers,” he added.

Although “Jeopardy!” producers remain tight-lipped about Trebek’s successor, they did formally announce Wednesday that Burton, 64, will be joined by the following top-tier talent as future guest hosts:

George Stephanopoulos, anchor of both “Good Morning America” and “This Week With George Stephanopoulos”

Robin Roberts, anchor of “Good Morning America”

David Faber, co-anchor of “Squawk on the Street” and former “Celebrity Jeopardy!” champion

Joe Buck, three-time National Sportscaster of the Year award winner

According to Variety, “Jeopardy!” GOAT Ken Jennings was the first to guest host the series this season, followed by a lineup that has included Anderson Cooper, Katie Couric, Bill Whitaker, Mayim Bialik, Dr. Oz, Savannah Guthrie, Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Aaron Rodgers. Meanwhile, “Jeopardy!” All-Star Buzzy Cohen will host the show’s Tournament of Champions in May.
