Go Fish for 2/26/12 by Capt. Bill Miller
Amberjack fishing this week was fantastic. Capt. Jesse Mayer took me to a wreck fifty miles offshore that was loaded with AJ’s.
We started by trolling rigged ballyhoo around the wreck in 150 feet and promptly caught three amberjack in the 30 pound class. Next we anchored on the wreck and chummed the jacks to the top.
With the jacks in frenzy I caught two on a fly rod and Mayer and I also caught them on top water chuggers and butterfly jigs. To finish off our day we caught too many to count on live bait using light tackle.
What made this so much fun was that most of the action was on the surface and very visual. We were filming this for my new show “Fishing with Bill Miller” and got fantastic footage including underwater shots of the jacks eating our chum and my fly.
The spring schools of big black drum have moved in off Pinellas Point. They are not real hard to find because there is usually a big fleet of boats on them. Dark colored jigs bounced on the bottom work for me but they can also be caught on just about any type of jig or bait that stays on the bottom.
Capt.Mac Gregory reports that he and his parties have been limiting out daily on pompano fishing Sarasota Bay. Gregory like yellow and white pompano jigs rigged with teaser flys for best success.
Redfish have moved onto Tarpon Key in the Ft. Desoto area big time. Fresh cut pinfish or ladyfish has been working better than live bait for the scent conscious bull reds. Anchoring and waiting for the reds to come to you has been working better than chasing the schools.
