Go Fish for 9/4/11

By Captain Bill Miller

Capt. T.J. Stewart guided me and the "Hooked on Fishing" film crew to a super day of fishing this week. During a morning fishing trip I landed and released a tarpon, snook, redfish and trout fishing trip giving me a "Super Grand Slam" as recognized by the State of Florida.

Stewart, Ed Richardson and I landed seven tarpon at the Skyway and then we went to Terra Ceia Bay where we caught over 30 redfish with snook and trout mixed in. We used small white bait to catch the reds, snook and trout and big threadfins for the tarpon.

Anglers fishing the south Skyway fishing pier scored well with pompano on vertically jigged pompano jigs. Spanish mackerel moved in and were caught by casting silver spoons.

Capt. Billy Miller and his charters had double limit mangrove snapper days this week in Tampa Bay fishing the channel edges and rock piles near the Skyway. Using small white bait also produced keeper sized gag grouper, which were released, mackerel, flounder and white grunts.

Close in Gulf artificial and mitigation reefs are holding lots of fish including Spanish mackerel, flounder, speckled and silver trout, jacks, ladyfish and sharks. Chumming with a frozen chum bag and small cut pieces of bait will fire up the bite. Fish the entire water column, top to bottom, for the best action.

Tarpon have moved up into Tampa Bay around the Gandy, Frankland and Causeway bridges. Davis Island and the Hillsborough River basin by Tampa General Hospital also has lots of tarpon in the area.
