Go Fish for 3/27/11 by Capt. Bill Miller

Land based anglers have had good action this week.

Silver trout and sheepshead have been biting well at the Ballast Point Pier for anglers using live and fresh dead shrimp around the pilings.

Spanish mackerel and pompano provided good catching for anglers fishing from the Skyway Piers reports Bill Dumansky. Silver spoons and fresh cut threadfin have been hooking the macs, while yellow and white jigs bounced on the bottom have been fooling the pompano.

Anglers fishing from the Redington Pier have been catching big kingfish using lady fish and Spanish mackerel for bait. A.J. Heleynk and Frankie Vanis both scored with kings near forty pounds while Greg LaChance released a 150 pound tarpon.

Tarpon have been biting on the incoming tide around  the Skyway bridge pilings. Anglers fishing with Capt.Mac Gregory were drifting big live threadfins around the bridge and jumped eight tarpon during a morning trip.

Capt. Billy Miller guided a group of anglers from Arkansas this week to some great fishing. They started the morning catching limits of Spanish mackerel off of St. Pete Beach, then they came into Tampa Bay and limited on speckled trout and sheepshead.

Larry Mastry was slow trolling live white baits around the South County and Treasure Island Reefs trying to catch kingfish. He did not catch any kings but did catch three keeper grouper. The grouper came up from the bottom to hit the free lined baits near the surface.

Grouper season for recreational anglers opens Aril 1 in state and federal waters.
