What's Biting and Where?

Go Fish for 6/25/11

Capt. Eddie Herrington reports that tarpon fishing on the Redington Pier is red hot. The best time has been in the afternoon although morning has produced some fish. Pinfish and pumpkin seeds, caught with a Sabiki, have been the best baits.

Greg LaChance fought a giant tarpon from the pier for over two hours only to lose it in the surf line when his line got wrapped on an abandoned crab trap.

Big catch and release snook have been biting well at the pier on grunts and small ladyfish. The tide change has been the best time to hook up.

A few mackerel have also been caught at the pier using spoons and white bait. Flounder were on fire but have cooled off some this week. White bait and small pinfish were the best baits.

Mangrove snapper have been the target for Captain Lee Blick at the Skyway. Blick likes to chum with cut up green backs and use a chunk of green back or a small shrimp for bait. Showing up in the chum line have also been out of season grouper and big tarpon.

Eric and Dawn Partlow, fishing with Capt. Billy Miller, had a big day on tarpon off of Anna Maria. After a slow start to the morning, the bite turned on and it was tarpon as fast as they could cast bait including some double headers.

Early morning tarpon fishing has also been good along St. Pete Beach. Anchoring along the swim buoys and floating a pinfish or pumpkin seed under a cork has been the best tactic.
