Go Fish for July 10, 2011

Tarpon fishing continues to be good around the Tampa Bay area. Anglers fishing from the Redington Pier had a banner week with many tarpon caught and released. Pinfish, green backs and pumpkin seeds are the best baits from the pier.

Capt. Billy Miller guided the father son team of Mike and Michael Akins to their first tarpon while fishing off  St. Pete Beach. Fresh menhaden fished on the bottom was the secret for success.

There still is good tarpon action along the gulf beaches, but look for some tarpon to be moving into Tampa Bay to spend the summer. Tarpon fishing in Tampa Bay should remain good through September.

Capt. Will Shook guided the “Hooked on Fishing” film crew to a good day of catch and release snook fishing in the Bishops Harbor area. Many of the snook were small, which is good news for the stock. That means the snook that lived through the past years freezes are now spawning a new generation of baby linsiders. Be very careful when handling these juvenile fish and take extra care to release them safely.

A few pompano and Spanish mackerel are being caught at the Skyway Fishing Piers reports Bill Dumansky. White and yellow jigs fished vertically around the pilings have been catching the pompano. Silver spoons and cut green backs under a cork have been the best rigs for mackerel.

With the summer sun heating up the water temps look for speckled trout in deeper water. Grass areas in 4 to 10 feet will be the most productive for good trout fishing. Anchoring over the deep grass and using live shrimp or white bait under a cork will produce good action on trout, mackerel, lady fish, jacks and small sharks. Hanging a frozen chum bag over the side will also increase your chances.
