Go Fish: For 12/11

Go Fish for 12/11/12 by Capt. Bill Miller

Capt. Jason Stock guided me and the “Hooked on Fishing” film crew this week in Sarasota Bay.

We started our day poling the crystal clear flats inside of Longboat Pass making long casts to mullet schools with gold spoons that resulted in several slot sized reds coming to the boat for pictures and a release.

As the sun got higher in the sky we moved further south into Sarasota Bay and Stock suggested switching to a Sebille suspending twitch bait. We located big schools of mullet working the mangrove island shore line and in short order we were catching big trout and redfish for the rest of the morning.

The Redington Pier reports that Chris Stein landed a 32 pound king mackerel this past week. Stein was using the zip line technique to hold his live Spanish mackerel bait away from the pier and just under the surface.

Flounder, silver trout and Spanish mackerel were also being caught by pier anglers.

Speckled trout fishing has been good in St. Martin’s River, Little Homosassa River and Mason Creek says Capt. William Toney. Live shrimp, Mirrodines and DOA shrimp have been the go to baits.

Capt. Richard Seward made a trip to Wacasassa last week and had some terrific fishing. Wading the potholes and oyster bas at extreme low tide and throwing soft plastics, Seward and friends caught big reds and trout until their arms got tired.
