Go Fish

By Captain Bill Miller

Capt. Larry Blue had a banner day trolling for mackerel in the Times Square area catching double digit limits, and more, in a half day. Blue and party were trolling #1 spoons behind #1 and #2 planers.

Spanish mackerel was the catch of the day for Capt. Billy Miller and his charter. Miller was trolling spoons and white bait to catch limits of big Spanish at the St. Pete Beach Reef. Also included in the catch was a barracuda and a kingfish. It is a little early for kings, but it is a good sign that some might be headed our way.

Billy Caldwell, Capt. Van Hubbard and Toby Weiner took a blue water trip 40 miles off Boca Grande and returned home with lots of fish. Caldwell and crew had a 40 pound Wahoo, numerous dolphin and black fin tuna along with some giant red grouper. Over 20 big American red snapper were also caught and released.

Capt. Rick Reddick guided me and the "Hooked on Fishing" film crew to a good catch of snook in the upper reaches of the Manatee River. Snook are normally way up the rivers in the winter, but Reddick has them located in the dead of summer. White bait was the key, but keeping it alive due to the fresh water was hard.

After the rain pompano made a showing at the Skyway Fishing Piers. Anglers working the bridge rock piles have been catching mangrove snapper on small white bait. Capt. Mac Gregory has been jumping 2-4 tarpon a tide around the main bridge span using big greenbacks.

White bait is plentiful on most grass flats. The bait is small so a small mesh net works best.
