Spanish mackerel made a strong showing at the gulf artificial reefs before the rainy weather visited us. Capt. Billy Miller was catching over 100 of the hungry macs a day with his charters trolling #1 silver spoons and drifting over the reefs with live bait. Big barracuda were also at the reefs snacking on the hooked Spanish.

White bait is available at the Ft. Desoto Piers, Skyway and the nearby grass flats. Use a small mesh cast net because the baits are mostly small with a few mediums mixed in. They are perfect size for macs, trout and snapper.

Pompano are being caught in Passa Grille Pass and around the Frankland and Gandy bridges for anglers using yellow and white pompano jigs with pink teaser flys.

Frankland, Gandy and the Causeway bridges have been producing good tarpon action for night time anglers. Look for the silver kings under the bridge lights and toss a jumbo shrimp in their path for a hookup.

Capt. Steve Bonnel reports good tarpon action for anglers casting Mirrolures and Bait Busters in upper Tampa Bay north of the Causeway. Good tarpon have also been reported off Davis Island and along Bayshore Boulevard.

Mastry’s Tackle says speckled trout action has been good for anglers fishing the Lewis Island flats. White bait and live shrimp under a cork has been the go to set up. Look for good shark fishing along the deep, bayside edge of the flat. Use big mackerel or mullet for bait.
