UM announced on Saturday that the following four players are seeking transfers and will not return to school for next season.
They are:
Travis Williams: The redshirt freshman linebacker from Norfolk, Va., spent part of spring practice running with the first team at outside linebacker after Ramon Buchanan was arrested. He finished the spring as a backup after Buchanan returned. His departure is a blow to a unit seriously lacking in depth.
Jamal Reid: A sophomore defensive back who was ranked No. 80 among ESPNU’s Top 150 prospects in the 2009 recruiting class, Reid managed to perform a rare double – he found his way into the doghouses of both Randy Shannon and Al Golden. By this time in his career and with his pedigree, Reid should have been a key reserve or even a starter for UM.
Kevin Nelson: A middle linebacker from Gainesville, Nelson’s status has been in question since he skipped practices leading up to the Sun Bowl in December. Golden played coy all spring regarding Nelson, who took part in only a handful of practices. His departure is another blow to the team’s linebacker depth.
Devont’a Davis: Another Gainesville product, Davis was rumored to be on a list of players who reportedly were to be suspended for the 2011 season opener against Maryland. Counting Davis, UM has already lost, or is in the process of losing, eight players from its 28-man class of 2010 signees.
Although Golden has repeatedly said he won’t address rumors, UM said in a statement Saturday that tailback Storm Johnson is not contemplating transferring as has been widely reported.
Johnson reportedly will be suspended for the start of the 2011 season because of undisclosed disciplinary reasons.
