University of Miami linebacker Ramon Buchanan has entered a pre-trial diversion program that could clear him of charges resulting from an altercation with police following an incident in a Coconut Grove bar on March 18.
Buchanan, 21, must complete 100 hours of community service, write letters of apology to two police officers involved in the incident and donate $300 to charitable organizations under an agreement reached by the State Attorney's Office and Joseph Rosenbaum, Buchanan's attorney.
Once Buchanan completes the pre-trial program, his record will be expunged.
Buchanan, from Palm Bay, was facing felony counts of resisting arrest and battery after allegedly spitting on and attempting to head butt a police officer, as well as three misdemeanor charges.
"He apologized to the police officers and they had no objection," Rosenbaum said. "No one got hurt. It was one of those things. It's just something that spun out of control. He's not that type of kid."
Buchanan did not appear in court on Monday. He was suspended indefinitely by coach Al Golden following his arrest, but was reinstated April 7.
Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat warned Buchanan through his attorney that "he could blow away his future with conduct like this."
Rosenbaum said that Buchanan has already begun serving his community service and had written letters of apology to several UM officials, including university president Donna Shalala.
Buchanan started 10 games last season and finished fifth in tackles.
His expected to be a starter this fall. Golden has not said whether Buchanan will be suspended or otherwise disciplined as the result of his arrest.
