High school football player appears to strike opponent with helmet in shocking video

A New Jersey high school football player is under fire after he allegedly ripped off an opponent's helmet and struck him with it.

According to MyCentralJersey.com, the incident happened at a Friday football game between Linden and Immaculata high schools. Video from the game appears to show a Linden defensive lineman take off an Immaculata player's helmet and swing it at his head. The Immaculata player was taken to a nearby hospital and received 10 stitches.

Linden police said they are investigating. "If criminal charges are filed, more details will be released," Linden police Capt. James Sarnicki told NJ.com.

Linden Schools Superintendent Danny A. Robertozzi said "disciplinary consequences will be issued accordingly."

"The Linden Public School District is taking this very seriously, and by no means is this incident a reflection of our school community or athletic teams," he said.

Immaculata athletic director Tom Gamino said Linden officials have apologized.
