Salty TopicsWhen Hurricanes make LandfallJoin us for "Salty Topics", Pinellas County Sea Grant Extension sponsored Marine Science Speaker series at Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center.   Hurricanes generate dangerous waves and surge capable of moving large amounts of sand, destroying buildings and infrastructure, and even taking lives. Storm forces reshape our nation's coastline by removing protective sand dunes that line much of our shorelines, making the coast vulnerability to future storms. Pinellas County has avoided a major hurricane landfall for many years. However, Tropical Storm Debby taught us that even a small storm can bring big changes.  Recent research on the coastal response to storms has led to models predict how the beach might respond to the next one. Come see how models were used to show which areas of the Northeast were most likely to erode during Hurricane Sandy and what these same models say about our local beaches!  Dr. Hilary Stockdon is a Research Oceanographer with the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Science Center in St. Petersburg, FL.  She received her B.S. in Geology from Duke University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Oceanography (Marine Geology) from Oregon State University.  Her research focuses on nearshore processes, coastal morphology, and large-scale coastal behavior. For the past 12 years, she has worked as a scientist with the USGS National Assessment of Coastal Change Hazards project, investigating the impacts of hurricanes on barrier islands with the goals of understanding processes that drive coastal change and predicting how beaches will respond to future storms.  We are happy to host the series at Weedon Island Cultural and Natural History Center at 1800 Weedon Drive NE, St Petersburg, FL 33702, with refreshments donated from the Friends of Weedon Island (http://fowi.org).Photo Credit: National Geographic6:45 p.m.   Light Refreshments7:00 p.m.   Salty TopicsFor more information please contact Libby Carnahan at (727) 453-6522Reservation policy Before continuing, we would like to make you aware of our reservation policies.
