Steidinger Auditorium 100 8th Ave SE Saint Petersburg, FL 33701Join us for the 2nd year of the Marine Research Speaker series.  This talk will highlight decades of research on bony fishes and sharks, particularly the feeding biology of these fascinating fishes. Dr. Motta will illustrate and discuss the research of his graduate students and himself including the feeding of nurse to whale sharks, how mako shark scales reduce drag, the mechanism shark suckers use to attach to their host fishes, how billfish bills are designed, how sharks track and capture their prey, and how he brings this research to the classroom at the University of South Florida.  Biography – Professor Philip Motta, a graduate of Duke University and the University of Hawaii, has spent over 30 years studying the feeding biology of coral reef fishes and sharks. Together with his graduate students they have investigated the structure and function of shark’s teeth, bite force in fishes, whale shark feeding biology, prey capture behavior of sharks,  the function of mako shark scales, and movement patterns of reef fishes. Dr. Motta will discuss this research and adventures from crawling inside the mouth of live whale sharks  to shark tagging with USF undergraduate students.
