Want Faster Performance and Better Fuel Economy?

Sponsored

Hybrid and electric car technology is progressing quickly, but these vehicles can be very expensive and not always practical. 95% of Americans, including the Tampa Bay area, are still driving gasoline-powered cars and 90% still will in 2020. That’s why Mazda has been developing their SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY. Not just a buzzword, Mazda has been improving their vehicles to make them both faster and more fuel efficient.

A Normal Midsize Sedan vs. a SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY Sedan

Not convinced? The 2015 Chrysler 200 midsize sedan was fully redesigned this year. It comes standard with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine producing 184 hp and 173 lb-ft of torque. In Edmunds.com testing, it took a full 9 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph. The EPA says the sedan gets up to 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.

Now let’s take a look at the current 2016 Mazda6 available at Cox Mazda in Bradenton. It has a standard 2.5L four-cylinder with a similar 184 hp and slightly higher 184 lb-ft of torque. In Edmunds.com testing, the car went from zero to 60 mph in just 7.6 seconds. Fuel economy is better 26 mpg city and 38 mpg highway and gets even better. With an optional regenerative braking system, the 2016 Mazda6 can get 28 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. Those are hybrid-worthy numbers.

How Does SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY Work?

So how does SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY work? It actually is a combination of several different technologies.

  • Engine: Mazda created a new direct injection system to raise their compression ratios, made the oil and water pumps more efficient, and reduced the friction. Doing so they were able to make them more efficient and more powerful.
  • Body and Chassis: Over the years, cars have gotten heavier thanks to all the new technology we put in them. With each redesign, Mazda is committed to reducing weight. Right now this means using high-tensile steel that’s both lighter and stronger. Mazda has dropped more than 200 pounds from their cars and made them 30% more rigid.
  • Transmission: The six-speed automatic transmission found in these cars has more than meets the eye. It’s actually a new type of transmission that combines an automatic’s torque converter with a clutch controlled by the vehicle. Basically, it gets the advantages of a manual without you having to do the shifting.
  • i-ELOOP: Mazda is also developing new technologies like this regenerative braking system that’s available on 2015 Mazda3 and 2016 Mazda6. It converts the kinetic energy lost during braking into electricity. While a car is stopped, that electricity powers the car’s electronics rather than wasting fuel.

The Best Trucks and SUVs for Towing a Boat

Sponsored

Tampa Bay is fishing country. While fishing along the coast from a dock can be a lot of fun, there’s nothing quite like going out in the open water to catch a serious grouper. To tow your boat to the dock, you’re going to need a vehicle that's capable of towing it. Here's our guide to choosing the right SUV or truck to tow your fishing boat.

Tips for Choosing the Right Vehicle

The most important factor in choosing a vehicle for towing a boat is how much your boat weighs. If you have a small rowboat with an outboard motor, your whole setup won't weigh much more than 300 pounds. You may even choose a pickup truck that you can place your boat into, rather than select a vehicle for its towing strength.

Remember you shouldn’t try to attach a trailer hitch to your commuter vehicle. Trying to tow something with a vehicle that's not made for towing can overstrain the engine or cause suspension damage.

If you have a larger power boat, it may weight anywhere from a 1000 to 10,000 pounds requiring you to have anything from a hearty SUV to a heavy duty pickup truck. Be sure to also keep in mind other factors that may drive up the weight of your boat like a full tank of gas, the trailer for your boat, and any snacks and brews you plan on bringing.

Which Vehicle Fits Your Towing Needs?

At Cox Chevrolet in Bradenton, Florida, we carry a wide variety of SUVs and trucks capable of towing your fishing boat. Here’s a look at some of the models that may suit your needs:

  • 2015 Chevrolet Colorado: This all-new midsize truck tows up to 7,000 pounds.
  • 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: The light-duty trucks can tow anywhere between 7600 and 12,000 pounds. We also have heavy duty trucks that can handle close to 30,000 pounds.
  • 2015 Chevrolet Suburban: The full-size Suburban has a standard V8 that can  tow up to 8300 pounds
  • 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe: Similar to the Suburban, these SUVs tows up to 8600 pounds
